He joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman at the age of fifteen, but due to severe near-sightedness, he was forced to abandon his chosen career. Instead, he became a civil engineer, specialising in harbour commissions. In his spare time, he turned to writing adventure yarns and historical novels, almost always with a nautical setting.
